Emotion Faces

First Grade Social studies Activities: Emotion Faces

What You Need:

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Mirror (optional)

What You Do:

  1. Help your child draw a face without any expression. Simply draw the outline of the head, the hair, open eyes, and a "u" shape for the nose.
  2. Have your child finish drawing the person's clothing.
  3. Ask your child what emotions she can name and what they look like on a human face. For each emotion she mentions ask her what happens to the eyes, mouth, and colour of the face.
  4. As she explains the differences taking place in the human face, help her draw them on construction paper with the correct corresponding colors. (Example: If she says that anger creates red cheeks, draw circles on red construction paper.) Cut out all of the shapes you have drawn.
  5. Name an emotion and ask her to assemble the face according to her description. If you have a mirror handy, ask her to mimic what the emotion looks like with her own face.
