Fourth Grade Recipes Activities: Baked French Toast Recipe

What you need:

  • 3 cups of eggnog
  • 1 loaf of white, potato, or whole wheat bread
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Sheet pans
  • Powdered sugar
  • Maple syrup

*If you don't have any eggnog, you can make your own by combining:

  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1-teaspoon vanilla
  • 1-teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ cup sugar

What you do:

  1. Help your child get started by preheating the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and getting out two sheet pans to bake the French toast in.
  2. Invite your child to get out the measuring cups and a medium sized mixing bowl. Have him find the 1-cup measuring cup and then measure the correct amount of eggnog into the mixing bowl. If you don't have any eggnog on hand, you can easily whip some up using the recipe above.
  3. Now he can place six slices of bread in the mix to soak up all the tasty eggnog. He can even add an additional sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg for an extra festive holiday treat!
  4. Invite him to measure 1-Tablespoon of vegetable oil and equally spread it on the sheet pans. He can use a paper towel to make sure there is an even coating of the oil.
  5. Help him gently place the eggnog soaked bread slices onto the sheet pan and then put it into the oven. He can set a timer for 5 minutes.
  6. While he's waiting to flip the oven baked French toast, he can get plates out for the hot slices of French toast along with butter and maple syrup. He can also put some powdered sugar in a small bowl to sprinkle over the top of the finished toast, which adds an extra bit of flavour!
  7. Now he can carefully remove the tray of French toast from the oven with a mitt, so that he can give each a gentle flip. Place them back in the oven for an additional 5 minutes. An adult can offer assistance as needed when using the oven – no one wants to get burnt!
  8. Once the French toast pieces are evenly browned on both sides, your child can remove the tray and place a couple on each plate for everyone to enjoy! Don't forget to drizzle with maple syrup, add a pat of butter and a sprinkle of powdered sugar!

Not only is he learning about measuring and timing with this morning activity, he is gaining great knowledge of the culinary arts!
