A Day in the Life of the Easter Bunny

Students will be able to describe the life of the Easter Bunny in a narrative essay.

(5 minutes)
  • Call the class together for a read aloud story. Say something like, “It is springtime! There are many holidays all around the world that happen during the spring. One of those holidays is called Easter. There is a magical creature called the Easter Bunny who is said to deliver Easter eggs to children all over the world on Easter morning. Today we’re going to read a book to learn more about the Easter Bunny.”
(10 minutes)
  • Read aloud the The Story of the Easter BunnyBy Sheila Black.
  • Pause as you read to ask questions about the text and define any unknown words.
(10 minutes)
  • Invite the class to share some of the things they heard about the Easter Bunny.
  • Have students turn and talk to a partner to share one thing that they could imagine the Easter Bunny doing during the day.
  • Allow several pairs to share out their ideas. Record their ideas on the board (e.g., decorates eggs, makes baskets, visits people).
  • Explain to students that they will get a chance to imagine themselves as the Easter Bunny. They are going to write a narrative essay about a day in the life of the Easter Bunny. Remind students that a NarrativeIs another way to say a story that tells about several events or ideas that go together. Review essay writing by saying, “Remember that an essay needs to include a beginning, middle, and ending with details.”
  • Model writing the beginning of a narrative about a day in the life of the Easter Bunny using some of the ideas that students shared previously.
  • Answer questions as needed.
(20 minutes)
  • Pass out the Easter Writing Prompt worksheet to each student to complete independently.
  • Walk around the classroom and support students as needed.

Support:

  • For students who need additional support, provide them with index cards to write down ideas for what the Easter Bunny might do during different parts of the day, using one card for morning, afternoon, and evening.

Enrichment:

  • Have students expand their writing by writing about a week in the life of the Easter Bunny. Encourage students to think about the other people or animals that the Easter Bunny interacts with on a weekly basis.
(5 minutes)
  • As students are working, walk around the room and ask them questions to help them expand on their thinking.
  • Collect student essays and assess whether students were able to write a narrative essay that describes a day in the life of the Easter Bunny.
(5 minutes)
  • Invite the class to gather together.
  • Ask 2-3 students to share their essay with the group. Encourage the other students to be active listeners and to provide either a question or positive feedback to the presenting student.
