• Tell your students that they will be learning to categorize and graph shapes.

• Scatter the shape cards in the centre.
• Ask your students to quickly tell you how many squares they see.
• Ask your students why it was not easy to quickly determine the number.
• Invite your students to take turns helping you organise the cards by their shapes into rows.
• Ask your students to quickly tell you how many squares, triangles, and circles they see.
• Ask your students to describe what they see in terms of more, less, and the same.
• Tell your students that they just categorized the cards by their shapes.
• Now invite your students to organise the cards by their colors.
• Tell your students that they just categorized the cards by their colors.
• Ask your students how many red, blue, and green cards they see.

• Display the Shape and colour cards on the whiteboard.
• Ask your students to name different ways the shapes could be classified.
• Invite a student to write the answer on the line.
• Continue with the other questions while having different students come up and write in the answers.
• Advance to the Graph the Colors worksheet on the whiteboard.
• Explain how to count the colors and then put big X’s in the squares to show how many there are.
• Invite some volunteers to help fill in the graph on the whiteboard.
• Invite your students to compare and contrast the number of colors based on the graph.

• Display the Count and Classify worksheet on the whiteboard.
• Explain how to complete the worksheet.
• Hand out the worksheet and have students work on it independently.
• Observe and support your students as they work.
• Enrichment:Above level students should draw a picture using shapes and colors and then create a graph to go with it.
• Support:Struggling students could be given simple clues as they work.
(5 minutes)
• During Guided practise, look for students who are participating.
• During Independent Working Time, look for students who are following directions and focusing on their own work.
• Your students should be able to colour the shapes in the correct colors.
• Your students should be able to count and record the number of shapes on the graph.
(5 minutes)
• Ask your students to think of other things that could be graphed.
