Contraction Match-Up

Which set of standards are you looking for?

Students will be able to form common contractions.

(5 minutes)
  • Write the words "do" and "not" on the board.
  • Read the words aloud. Tell students that these words often go together, such as in the sentences, "I do not like eggs" and "I do not know the answer."
  • Tell students that sometimes two words can be combined together into what is called a Contraction. When words are shortened into contractions, an apostrophe takes the place of the letters that are missing.
  • Explain that the words "do" and "not" can be combined to make the word "don't." Write "don't" on the board and have students figure out which letter is missing.
(5 minutes)
  • Tell students that there are many different pairs of words that can be shortened into contractions.
  • Write the following words on index cards (one per card): is, not, I, am
  • Show students how the words can be combined to make contractions:
    • Is + not = isn't
    • I + am = I'm
  • Play around to show some of the combinations that wouldn't work (e.g. I + is or is + am).
(10 minutes)
  • Write the following words on index cards: they, are, he, is.
  • Have students turn and talk to a partner to determine which words can be combined together to make contractions.
  • After giving students time to talk with a partner, have them come back together to share their ideas with the group.
(20 minutes)
  • Have students work with the same partner.
  • Hand out the Memory Match Game – Contractions worksheet to each pair and have students cut out the cards.
  • Tell students that they should turn the cards upside down and take turns turning over two cards. If the cards show words that match the contraction, they get to keep the pair. If not, the cards should be added back to the game.
  • The player with the most cards at the end of the game wins.

Support:Have students play the game with a smaller amount of cards.

Enrichment:Challenge students to write sentences using the contractions that they made during the game.

  • Assess how students are recognizing common contractions.
(5 minutes)
  • Bring the group back together.
  • Ask students to share sentences that contain contractions. Have the rest of the class identify the contractions in the sentences.
