Find that Blend

Students will be able identify and sort words by their ending consonant blends.

(5 minutes)
  • Write up the letters a/e/i/o/u and b/c/d/f on the whiteboard. Remind your students that the first set of letters are called vowels and the second set of letters are called consonants.
  • Say, “When we put certain consonants together they form a sound that we call a blend. Today we will practise reading and spelling consonant ending blends. This means that the consonant blend comes at the end of a word.”
(5 minutes)
  • Explain that we can use consonant blends to help us read and spell words.
  • Write -ld, -sk, -ft, -lt, and -st on the whiteboard. Under each ending blend write one word (mold, task, drift, colt, and rest).
  • Read each word aloud to the class, circling the ending consonant blend as you read the word.
  • Tell the class that when you read a consonant ending blend, you can hear both of the letters, although you read them fluently together.
(10 minutes)
  • Write up the following sentence on the board: On a cold day, a very bold girl put on her best vest.
  • Ask your students to find the ending blends in the sentence. Have them turn and talk with a partner to share the ending blends.
  • Invite one or two students up to circle the ending blends in the sentence.
  • Tell your students that now they will try to think of as many words that use the -ld ending blend as they can in one minute.
  • Pass out paper and pencils and set a timer for one minute. Tell your class ready, set, go!
  • Have students share out their word list and add the words under the -ld column you wrote on the whiteboard.
  • If time allows, repeat this process for the remaining ending blends.
(15 minutes)
  • Explain that students will now use their ending blend detective skills to complete the Ending Blends worksheet independently.
  • Support: Provide struggling students with only one ending consonant blend to practise reading, identifying, and spelling words with.

  • Enrichment: Encourage advanced students to identify additional words that contain the ending consonant blends from this lesson and use those words in a short story.
(5 minutes)
  • Collect the Ending Blends worksheets and assess whether students' were able to correctly identify and sort the words by their ending consonant blends.
(5 minutes)
  • Review the concept of ending consonant blends by going over the worksheet as a class and adding the new words to the word lists on the board.
  • Answer student questions as needed.
