Going on a Feelings Hunt
Students will be able to identify emotions shown through different facial expressions.
- Have students popcorn share all the different Feelings, or emotions, they can think of.
- Call on a few different students to make faces showing different feelings. Ask the class to guess what feeling is being shown.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(10 minutes)
- Read aloudThe Feelings BookBy Todd Parr.
- Ask students to share different feelings in the book.
- Have students turn to a partner and share their favorite feeling in the book, explaining why they like it.
Guided practise(10 minutes)
- Tell students that they are going to go on a feelings hunt.
- Look through a book and place a sticky note on pages that have faces showing different emotions. On each sticky note, draw a face that matches the feeling you found.
Independent working time(20 minutes)
- Have students work independently to look through books and find different feelings.
- As students work, circulate around the room to ask questions about the feelings and how they appear in the facial expressions.
Support:Have students work together when looking through the books.
Enrichment:Have students write the feelings they find on sticky notes.
- Assess how students are reading different feelings as they look at the pictures in books.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Call on students to share a picture they found with the class. Have other students try to determine what feeling the face shows.
