Mammal or Bird?
Students will be able to identify the characteristics of mammals and birds.
- Ask your students to name some mammals.
- Ask your students to name some birds.
- List them on the board.
- Tell your students that they will be learning about the characteristics of birds and mammals today.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(30 minutes)
- Go over the Mammals and Birds! handout as a class.
Guided practise(20 minutes)
- Tell your students to draw a picture for each mammal characteristic.
- An example could be a cat taking care of a kitten when it is born for the mammals give birth to live young characteristic.
- Tell your students to draw a picture of an egg hatching for a bird. Tell your students to also draw two pictures that show birds looking for food.
- An example could be a picture of a bird using its long beak to pick up food.
Independent working time(30 minutes)
- Tell your students that they are mammals.
- Tell them to write about how their parents took care of them when they were young, and some behaviors that they learned from their parents.
- Tell them to draw a picture to illustrate a parent mammal taking care of their young when the baby is born. An example could be a cat taking care of a kitten.
- Tell your student to pick what kind of bird they would like to be. Tell them to write three or more sentences describing the bird that they would like to be.
- Tell your students to write three or more sentences to explain how they would find food and protect their young if they were a bird.
- Enrichment:Tell your students to research a mammal that does not have the standard characteristics of a mammal. Tell them to draw the mammal and write five facts about it.
- Support:Tell your students to complete the Mammals and Birds: Recall worksheet.
- Ask your students to write about four characteristics of a mammal and three characteristics of a bird.
Review and closing(20 minutes)
- Ask your students to present any one part of their Independent Working Time assignment.
