Noun or Verb?

Students will be able to tell the meaning of a noun and verb. Students will be able to identify frequently used nouns.

(10 minutes)
  • Ask students if they know what a NounIs.
  • Explain that a noun is a person, place, animal, or thing.
  • Ask students if they are nouns.
  • Tell your students that a VerbIs an action.
  • Have your students identify any verbs they are currently performing.
(10 minutes)
  • Go around the class and ask your students to identify one noun that is present in the classroom, such as a book, a board, or a person.
  • Instruct your students to state one verb that they do daily. For example, your students might say that they walk or eat daily.
(20 minutes)
  • Pair your students, and give each pair a sheet of paper.
  • Instruct your students to fold the paper in half.
  • Direct your students to write NounOn top of one column made by the fold and VerbOn top of the other.
  • Instruct students to write and draw 5 nouns in the first column and 5 verbs in the other column with a partner.
  • Walk around the class to help students with spelling.
  • Set the timer to 10 minutes.
  • Go over nouns and verbs that students have written as a class.
(15 minutes)
  • Ask students to complete the Grammar: Nouns and Verbs worksheet.
  • Set the timer to 10 minutes for your students to complete.
  • Go over it as a class.
  • Enrichment:Instruct students to draw 4 columns on a sheet of paper. Have them label Name, place, animal,And ThingAs a header for each column. Direct your students to write as many examples for each category as they can think of.
  • Support:Pick out small items from the class, such as rulers and markers. Ask students to identify the items. Tell them that the objects are nouns. Explain that people and animals are nouns as well. Ask your students to name animals and people and the actions (verbs) that they do.
(10 minutes)
  • Instruct your students to write 2 nouns on a sheet of paper.
  • Ask your students to write 2 verbs that each noun does next to the noun. For example, a student Reads, and a clock Ticks.
(10 minutes)
  • Go around the class and ask the first student to state a noun, and have the person next to her state a verb that the noun can do.
  • Do this until all students get a turn.
