Which set of standards are you looking for?

Students will be able to write about their own creation with detail.

(5 minutes)
  • Have students pick any two or three pictures from the collection.
  • Have students look at their pictures to see what can be used from each picture to create something new.
(10 minutes)
  • Show students that they can take parts of each picture and put them together to make something new.
  • Take two pictures of your own and show them how you would do this. Cut out the different features of your pictures and glue them together on a white piece of paper.
  • Brainstorm a backstory for your new character. What is his mission? Why is he the way he is?
  • Ask the class what else you can add to make it better.
(10 minutes)
  • Give the students paper and have them take out their scissors and glue.
  • Allow students to work together during this time to so they can help each other brainstorm.
  • Leave your example displayed for reference.
(15 minutes)
  • Once students have their new creation, ask the class to take writing paper back to their desks and work independently on their writing piece.
  • Remind them of your creation's backstory. Ask them to add the details of what their creation might do, where it would live, and what it would eat.
  • Enrichment:For student who need more of a challenge, have them create more than one creature in their story.
  • Support:Students who need extra support may use labels in their picture to help guide them.
(2 minutes)
  • Use the picture and writing piece to determine the student's understanding of the lesson.
  • Observe students as they work with peers.
(3 minutes)
  • Share the new creatures on the overhead.
  • These pages could be turned into a class book for the kids to read throughout the year.
  • Give students praise for their creativity and hard work.
