Peace Corner & Creating Peace Activities
Students will be able to understand the importance of peace corners, generate activities they would like to place in their peace corner, and practise mindfulness techniques.
- Gather students into a circle, either seated in chairs or on the floor.
- Ask students if they have a space or corner in their home or bedroom where they go to find calm and relaxation. If so, what do they like about their space?
- Ask, "If you could name the space, what would you call it? How does it help you regulate yourself? What does Emotional regulationMean?"
- Share with students that they will be creating activities to use in their Peace corner.
- To help students generate ideas, have them think about what helps them to find calm. Ask what they could create and practise in the peace corner.
- Generate a list of ideas on the board that the students would like to add to their peace corner (e.g. coloring pages, glitter jar, affirmations, calming and focusing audio, guided mindfulness exercises, etc.)
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(5 minutes)
- Model for students how to use the peace corner by setting the sand timer for three minutes and then using a mindful listening meditation, practising deep breathing, or practising mindful walking.
- Show students the Peace Corner Activities worksheet that they will be working on in small groups of 2–3.
- Model for students how you would create your own coloring page to keep in the peace corner.
Guided practise(5 minutes)
- Ask three student volunteers to come up and show the class how to use the peace corner by setting the sand timer for three minutes and using breathing techniques, mindful walking, or headphones for mindful listening.
Independent working time(25 minutes)
- Explain to students that they will go back to their seats and work in groups of 2–3 to create items for the peace corner.
- Hand out the Peace Corner Activities worksheet to each group.
- Explain to students that they may also practise mindful walking, movement, and mindful listening in the peace corner.
- As students work at their seats, call over one small group at a time to use the peace corner (set a timer for three minutes for each group at the peace corner).
Enrichment: If technology is available, students may create their own calming video or audio meditations.
Support: Peer mentors will work with other students who would benefit from working with a peer model. Examples of coloring pages may be given.
- During the Independent Work time, pay attention to how students are creating materials for the peace corner. Are they creating materials that will help them calm down? Do they seem engaged in the activity?
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- After all students have used the peace corner, gather the students together in a circle and ask them what it was like to use the peace corner.
- Ask for volunteers to share what they created for the peace corner.
- Ask each group to show their final products, if they would like to, and to demonstrate how their product may be used in the peace corner.
- Place the final products in the peace corner when completed.
- Ask the class if they have a different name they would like to use for this corner.
- Show students where the peace corner pass is located in the room and explain that when they feel they would like to use the corner, they will take the pass and give it to their teacher to use the corner for three minutes.
