So Many Short A Words!

Students will be able to write and recognise words that begin with the short A sound.

(5 minutes)
  • Hold up an object that starts with the letter A.
  • Ask students if they know what the object is called. Then, have them say the word aloud as a group or call on a student to share.
  • Tell the students that the word (e.g., Abacus) starts with the letter A. Today students will be thinking all about the letter A.
(5 minutes)
  • Model thinking aloud to come up with another word that begins with the letter A, such as “apple.”
  • Write the word “apple” on the board and demonstrate saying the sound that short A makes by saying, “The word apple starts with the letter A. The letter A makes more than one sound. Today we are going to practise finding words that start with the short A sound, like the AhIn apple.”
(5 minutes)
  • Tell students that you are going to work together to come up with as many short A words as they can.
  • Pair students up and have them try to come up with at least three words that start with the short A sound.
  • Have each group share out one to two of their words with the class. As they share, add the words to an anchor chart titled, “Short A Words” hung where all students can see.
  • Choose one of the short A words and ask students to think about how they could illustrate (remind students that an illustration is another way to say picture) their word so that other people will know what the word is.
  • Model illustrating one of the words and writing the word underneath the illustration. Circle the letter A in the word.
(15 minutes)
  • Tell students that now they will get to create their very own A word poster that will show one of the short A words with a matching illustration. Explain that the posters will get hung in the classroom to help students when they write.
  • Pass out supplies to each student.

Support

  • Provide a few examples of short A words for students to choose from for their poster (you could refer them to the classroom anchor chart).
  • For students who need printing help, write their word out using dot-to-dot letters for them to trace on their poster.

Enrichment

  • Have students write a sentence using their short A word to include on their poster.
  • Have students complete the Short A Words worksheet.

  • Assess whether students are able to accurately create an illustration to go with their letter A word.
(5 minutes)
  • Have the students leave their posters on their tables or desks and invite the students to do a gallery walk around the classroom to observe one another’s work.
