Text Feature Detective
Students will be able to analyze the parts of a nonfiction text.
- Read aloud a nonfiction text. Ask students to share what the main topic is, the key ideas, and any evidence or connections that they can make.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(10 minutes)
- Explain that nonfiction texts have different text features. Text featuresAre ways of presenting and teaching information. Write a list of the following text features on the board: table of contents, glossary, pictures with captions, headings, charts, or graphs.
- Go through and look for tables of contents in the book you read aloud to the class.
Guided practise(10 minutes)
- Present the Where Are the Text Features? worksheet. Lead students in looking for the remaining text features that you wrote on the board.
- Explain that all nonfiction texts will not include all of the text features.
Independent working time(15 minutes)
- Have students select and read a nonfiction text.
- Handout the Where Are the Text Features? worksheet. Have students search for and record the different text features that they find.
- Have students complete the worksheet while examining a nonfiction text they have previously read.
- Have students complete the Read the Pictures worksheet.
- Assess students’ understanding by noticing how they analyze the different text features.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Have students share the types of text features that they found in the texts they examined.
