The Most Special Easter Egg
Students will be able to retell a story to include the beginning, middle, and ending.
- Gather students together and say, “Today we are going to read a special story about an interesting holiday that happens in the spring, it is a holiday that some of you might be celebrating. Easter! Many stories about Easter include someone called the Easter Bunny.”
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(5 minutes)
- Display the book, Easter EggBy Jan Brett and ask students to look carefully at the cover.
- Tell students that the book was written and illustrated by the same person, Jan Brett.
- Explain that you will now spend a few minutes previewing the story by doing a picture walk. You can say, “A picture walk means that we will be looking carefully at the book without reading the words. This will give us an idea about the story and let us make Predictions. Remember predictions mean we can make a guess about what we think will happen in the story, using the pictures as clues.”
- Spend the next few moments completing a picture walk of the story.
Guided practise(10 minutes)
- Read aloud the book, Easter EggBy Jan Brett
- Pause as you read to ask the students questions about the text such as, “Why is Hoppi taking care of the blue egg? What do you think the Easter Bunny is looking for in the best egg?”
- Point out the illustrations as you read, remind students that the illustrations can add to our understanding of the story because they give us lots of small details to pay attention to.
Independent working time(10 minutes)
- Explain to students that they will now get Retell The story usings pictures and words. Remind students that retelling means to tell the story again in their own words, thinking about the important parts of the story.
- Display the I Can Retell a Story worksheet and explain to students how to use the worksheet.
- Pass out worksheet copies to each student to complete independently.
- Have students work with a partner to complete the worksheet. Provide students with a copy of the book to reference as they complete their worksheet.
- Encourage students to write full sentences to describe the beginning, middle, and ending of the story.
- Ask students questions about the story and have them share what happened in the beginning, middle, and end.
- Collect students work to assess whether they were able to retell the story using pictures and words.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Invite a few students to share their worksheet, I Can Retell a Story, with the class.
- Remind students that retelling a story is a great way to remember the details and learn more about what happened in a book.
